Edinburgh adds a constraint that few other cities apply at the same density: a very large proportion of the central building stock is listed or within a conservation area, and much of the centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For building services this affects almost every visible decision — where plant can be located, whether external condensers are acceptable, how flues and terminations are routed, and what can be done to a facade to accommodate ventilation.
The result is that services strategy and heritage consent have to be developed together. A ventilation strategy that assumes roof plant, or a heat pump strategy that assumes external units, can be undeliverable in a listed building and is better tested early.
